Friends of the Coastal Chaparral
Our namesake plant - Artemisia Californica (also known as California Sagebrush) - is a dominant species within coastal chaparral communities, which are under pressure from climate change and urbanization.
Coastal chaparral are found in Mediterranean climates - characterized by mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers with fog. Our coastline is prized for this reason and (as a result) highly vulnerable to urban, recreational, and agricultural development. Today, only 15% of original habitat is intact. A 2017 assessment found that only 6% of our coastal chaparral (743 square miles) lies within protected areas.
Due to climate change, we have seen extended seasons of drought and increased fire danger. In many chaparral regions such as the Santa Monica Mountains, chaparral plant communities can be eliminated by frequent fires. This year, we have seen unprecedented rainfall; this may introduce new challenges as an overabundance of spring growth becomes fuel for fires in the hot summer months ahead.
Our hope and vision is to find market-driven pathways to support and protect these wild plant communities so that generations to come can continue to enjoy these ecosystems.
Sustainable Product and Packaging
We believe in conserving our resources and using only what we need. This value is core to our brand identity and informs our decisions from product formulation and packaging (minimalist, purist, multifunctional).
- We make sure to collect our ingredients only from trusted suppliers that provide transparency and traceability.
- Our bottles are made of glass with threaded necks so they can be reused over and over. We’d love it if you refilled your bottles with our oils and mists, but we’re just happy for you to reuse them.
- We’re working with what we call “The One Box Rule” - which is what we ask of ourselves. It’s the least we can do to conserve and protect what matters. Every product piece will use no more than one box. If that means no pretty box on-shelf? So be it.
We try to avoid product accessories where possible. We ask customers to consider just using a reducer to dispense product instead of using a sprayer.

Does this have CBD or THC?
No, our products contain no cannabis or related isolates in any form*. This product was created as an alternative to CBD. Many of our friends and family seek pain relief, but are not able to deal with the issues associated with cannabis (and/or hemp). We are happy that Californica's CALM treatment oil offers "issue-free" pain relief. That is why we made it. And that is why Californica products will always be CBD-free.
*According to Medical News Today, there are three types of CBD:
- Full-spectrum: Includes all parts of the cannabis plant. Full-spectrum products contain less than <0.3% THC.
- Broad-spectrum: This contains most of the cannabis plant compounds. Unlike full-spectrum, broad-spectrum products contain trace amounts of THC.
- Isolates: Only contain CBD, with no other cannabinoids or THC. Products that contain CBD-isolates may not produce any notable psychoactive effects.
What ingredient(s) address pain?
Our formulations thoughtfully include potent botanicals that work together in concert to provide multiple benefits. The key pain relieving aspect of our body oil is derived from A. californica, which grows wild in Southern California. A.californica has been used by Native American Indians for millenia to address various ailments including: sore throat, menstrual discomfort, back aches, arthritis, muscular strains, bruises, contusions, bone fractures.
How does it work?
A. californica contains powerful plant compounds called monoterpenes that relieve pain. Monoterpenes with known pain relieving activity in A. californica include camphor, eucalyptol, camphene, beta-pinene, borneol and thujone. The monoterpenes found in A. californica dampen the sensation of pain by inhibiting certain pain receptors located in the skin. These monoterpenes easily break the pain cycle in the skin and provide relief where needed. The monoterpenes are rapidly cleared from the skin with little toxicity since they are only present in small amounts.
